In recent years, watershed studies and water quality assessments have revealed that farm operations can be significant contributors of non-point source pollution to the surface waters of Pierce County if not managed properly. Through a planned approach using Best Management Practices (BMP’s); non-point pollution can greatly be reduced. Conservation planning provides the landowner with useful guidance on pasture rotation, fencing design, gutters & downspouts and waste storage designs. In some cases the District is able to provide some financial assistance to landowners implementing best management practices.
In 1997, the District has continued to train staff and provide a education/outreach program to county residents to help establish PCD as a leader in innovative approaches to the problem of non-point source pollution. |
