Spring Plantings
Stream Team celebrates the thawing of winter with plantings in Bonney Lake, Tacoma, and the Nisqually Estuary! Dig those shovels out of storage and join us in the effort to enhance and restore stream side habitat.

The shores of Lake Bonney will be enhanced with native vegetation on March 1. Supported by the Lake Bonney Conservation Association and the City of Bonney Lake, this planting will improve the natural environment in the Fennel Creek watershed.

On March 8, more than 400 plants will be planted along a tributary to Flett Creek at Celebration Park in south Tacoma. Funded through the City of Tacoma’s Make a Splash grant, this planting will replace blackberries and other weeds with native plants such as cedar, vine maple, and salmonberry.

Due to extremely wet site conditions, the Nisqually Estuary planting has been rescheduled from February 23 to March 15. Join Stream Team and the Nisqually Stream Stewards in the planting of 1,000 bare root trees and shrubs in this on-going effort to restore important salmon and wildlife habitat.

Plantings may be canceled or rescheduled at any time, so call ahead to confirm details. Driving directions and more information about the project will be sent upon registration (253) 845-2973.

Pierce County Children’s Water Festival

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Pierce County Environmental Services, Tacoma Water, and City of Tacoma are sponsoring the 2008 Tacoma-Pierce County Children’s Water Festival, and we’re looking for some great volunteers! If you are interested in the environment and like working with kids, this one-day event would be a great volunteer opportunity for you.

Almost 1,200 fifth-grade students from throughout Pierce County will be attending the 2008 Festival on Tuesday, March 25, on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University. Each classroom group will attend six different 25-minute sessions, including interactive classroom activities, outdoor games, larger “game show” style presentations, and an expo hall filled with all kinds of water related displays and activities. You can volunteer to be a GUIDE and lead a classroom group to their activities throughout the day. You’ll get to enjoy the variety of presentations that your classroom group attends, and you’ll be accompanied by the classroom teacher and adult chaperones. We are hoping to fill the guide slots with adult volunteers. High school students and others who would prefer it can volunteer to be a CLASSROOM ASSISTANT and spend the day helping out with one or two classroom activities.

You’ll get a free t-shirt with the cool “Water 4 Life” Festival logo, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. More importantly, you’ll spend the day sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with an excited bunch of kids, and probably learn quite a few things yourself.

To be a GUIDE or CLASSROOM ASSISTANT, please contact Kirsten Wecker at (253) 798-3524.

Lake Monitoring

Sunday, May 4, marks the start of the 2008 lake monitoring season. Stream Team currently coordinates a volunteer lake monitoring program for the Cities of Lakewood and Bonney Lake. Volunteers in these two programs will be contacted in April to schedule equipment drop-off and to arrange for a refresher on monitoring protocols. Additional lake monitoring volunteers are always welcome, so please let us know if you are interested. If you are a resident of American, Gravelly, Louise, Carp, Steilacoom, Bonney, or Debra Jane Lakes and would like more information, please contact the Stream Team office.

Stream Team also provides training and equipment for lake homeowner groups interested in monitoring their lake. Volunteer collected data is useful in establishing long-term trends in lake water quality and provides a basis for further study and management decisions. Contact Isabel Ragland at the Stream Team office if you are interested in learning more about lake monitoring.

Water Quality Workshop
Stream Team is holding a water quality monitoring workshop on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Swan Creek Park. If you have ever considered becoming a stream monitor or are just interested in learning more about water quality, this is the workshop for you. To sign up, contact the Stream Team office at (253) 845-2973 or by e-mail: isabelr@piercecountycd.org.

Spring Fair
For the first time, Stream Team will have a presence at the Puyallup Spring Fair on April 17-20. Not quite as big as the fall fair, and with a family-focused atmosphere, the Spring Fair provides an exciting outreach opportunity for Stream Team. Let us know if you are interested in helping out at the booth for a 3-hour shift. Like the Western Washington Fair in the fall, anyone who volunteers to staff the Stream Team booth will receive a free entry pass.

Parks Appreciation Day at Silver Creek
This year, April 19 will be a busy day in Puyallup at Silver Creek. Planted by Stream Team volunteers and local school groups in 2005, this site is going to get a face-lift by way of Lee’s Martial Art’s O.N.E. Team. And you can lend a hand too! Activities run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will include removing invasive weeds from native plants, preparing a new area to be planted this fall, and a stream clean-up. If interested, please contact Melissa at (253) 845-2973 to sign-up.
